Fantastic February – Open Heart Story

Story By Cynthia Lee De Boer

Literally every day of this month celebrates or recognizes something, with many days sharing honors.  The 14th celebrates Valentine’s Day, Organ Donor Day, and Ferris Wheel Day.  The least famous is the last.  In 1893, George Washington Gale Ferris invented the Ferris wheel in America.  Austria also claims credit for the day as it is said to be the most favorable weather day in their country for a ride.

President’s Day falls on the third Monday of the month, between Abraham Lincoln and George Washington’s birthdays.  This commemorates both men’s birthdays, while some believe it honors the office of the presidency.

The 2nd has everyone eagerly waiting for the Groundhog’s shadow prediction — six more weeks of winter or not.

The last holiday of the Christmas season is Candlemas.  The Modern calendar’s date is the 2nd and the Julian calendar marks it on the 15th.

Boy and Girl Scouts are honored in this month.   The 8th is Boy Scout Day.  Girl scouts and guides around the world recognize each other on the 22nd called International Thinking Day, founded in 1926 at the fourth Girl Guide/Girl Scout International Conference.

Established in 1937 on the 11th is White T-shirt Day to honor striking General Motor’s workers.  Their strike ended on this day and helped the United Auto Workers Union (UAW) union become the sole bargaining agent for General Motor’s autoworkers.

On the lighter side, there’s Hoodie Hoo Day on the 20th.   Everyone is to go outside at noon, wave their hands above their heads and chant “Hoodie Hoo” to chase away the winter blues.  This copyrighted day is courtesy of

There’s Lame Duck Day on the 6th, Kite Flying Day on the 8th, Polar Bear Day on the 17th, and of course occurring nearly every four years is Leap Day on the 29th.  It doesn’t occur on years ending in 00 that are not divisible by 400.  2016 is our next Leap Year.

So pick a day and celebrate Fantastic February.

Author’s Note:  I love the weird and wonderful, and February is sure full of both.  I hope you enjoy researching the days of this amazing month.  The photo was taken from my front door.
