A Day to Just Be – Open Heart Story
Story By Cynthia Lee De Boer
And so we begin another year. Some of us start it off with grand resolutions to be better — faster — stronger! Others have abandoned that whole idea for merely making it through each day just as they have in the past; while many more are in a scramble to get their holiday bills paid off before the next season. But it seems that no matter where we fit in, most of us don’t live in the moment. We are racing toward our goals, or the next deadline, and the relentless ticking of the clock. We seldom allow ourselves the opportunity of just being. After all we are Human Beings — not Human Doings!
I realize being in the moment is a difficult task for most of us. It’s hard to take time off from our duties and responsibilities but we owe it to ourselves. We all deserve to relish the moments of our lives. These moments allow us the time to acknowledge all we have and the goodness in our lives. When we allow ourselves to function on automatic pilot, we miss life. We’ve all seen these types of people, robotically moving from one task to the next, void of emotion, no spark of life. These poor souls are in desperate need of a recharge. We all deserve to just Be!
So this year take a day now and then for yourself. Enjoy doing nothing but Being yourself, delighting in the things you care for. We are blessed to live in a city with many wonderful parks; they are perfect for the art of just Being. For the homebodies, spending some time lounging in bed reading a favorite book or watching a movie might be the ticket. Looking through old photographs or letters from family and friends is a wonderful way to savor the memories of the past. Sit in meditation or prayer as you recall the blessing in your life and acknowledge the reasons you do the things you do. Recharge and be.
However you decide to spend your special day, remember this is your time and every tick of the clock is precious. It truly is about appreciating our journey through life and not about deadlines.
Never fear, tomorrow will arrive on schedule. The demands of the day will be waiting for you and you’ll be able to meet them with a new vitality from your day of nothing but Being.
